As Chairman of the Mecklenburg County Commission, I have provided strong and steady leadership, which has allowed the Commission to remain disciplined and focused in addressing the opportunities and challenges we face as a community.
I have led our community’s effort to bring economic opportunity to all people in our county, and I was the impetus behind the formation of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Economic Opportunity Task Force.
My leadership has been felt across the State through my successful, vocal opposition to the General Assembly’s proposal to redistribute sales tax revenue away from Mecklenburg County. In doing so, I protected the county from substantial losses.
I am also proud of other work I’ve done…
Ensuring proper funding for public education, and leading the effort to find dedicated funding for increased teacher compensation
Helping lead the effort to create and provide funding for Read Charlotte, a collective impact initiative to increase 3rd grade reading achievement for all children in our county
Advocating for the expansion of Medicaid in North Carolina under the Affordable Care Act
Putting nurses in every school in CMS
Increasing funding for our parks and recreation facilities
Expanding services to seniors
Enhancing support for our libraries, leading to increased access
Leading the effort to make Veterans Day an official holiday in the county
Increasing funding for veteran services
Supporting the Housing Our Heroes initiative that ended veteran homelessness
Helping lead the initiative to end chronic homelessness in our county by the end of 2016
Voting to create thousands of jobs through economic development
Leading the effort to bring the Brooklyn Village development to fruition
Supporting the vision to transform the North Tryon Street
